Dr. Heist is a professor in the Department of Zoology and is the Associate Director of the Center for Fisheries, Aquaculture, & Aquatic Sciences at Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Dr. Heist’s graduate programs trains MS and Ph.D. students for careers that include working with state and federal agencies as well as academic positions.  If you are interested in graduate school working with Dr. Heist please email him here.

Dr. Heist is a Conservation Geneticist who works mostly with fishes, including catfish, minnows, sturgeons, and paddlefish.  Past student projects have also included studies of sharks, bobcats, swamp rabbits, quail, and pine bark beetles.

Dr. Heist has a Ph.D. in Marine Biology from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science and teaches a Marine Biology course (Zoology 385 – Introduction to Marine Biology).  The course includes a 5-day field trip to Gulf Coast Research Laboratory in Ocean Springs Mississippi.
